I got my hard drives, mousepad, and ram late last week. Now I have lots of hard drive space.

On the 160 gig drive I'm planning on sticking a bunch of other operating systems on it. Windows (uck, uck....but that's where the games are), some various distros of Linux (I already use FreeBSD), and whatever else catches my fancy.

I've been really sick lately with some sort of freak cold or something worse. I've had headaches, sore throat, stuffy noise and shivers. Last thursday night I had some very strange dreams that were probably caused by it. I've been getting better, but just to be annoying my nose decided to bleed a lot too. I was getting a few bloody noses a day so I went to the campus health center, but they were closed. I didn't have any bloody noses ...yesterday (being today just started a half hour ago). I'm feeling better at least, but my throat is still a little sore.

The neat-o-ness is that I ordered some hard drives, a mousepad, some ram and headphones from newegg and they should arrive by this friday. :)

Now for bed, because I should get some sleep. I do have class I plan on going to.

I've been trying to get nsis (an installer generator for windows) to work completely under FreeBSD, but no dice. (mingw32-gcc (as a cross compiler) + nsis = building and packaging windows software without using windows)
Around June/July, code and makefiles were added to get NSIS to compile under a "posix" enviroment (meaning, Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, etc etc etc). It compiled fine up to me needing me to tell it where libiconv (in FreeBSD iconv is not in libc, as some other enviroments it seems to be). Then the text being passed to libiconv was causing libiconv to freak out. It was supposed to be encoded in UBC-2, but for some reason it was little endian (UBS-2LE) where the default is normally big endian.

So I fixed all that. Now under FreeBSD natively it can create installers just about anywhere NSIS under windows can. I can test them under wine, and they seem to work fine...except for the Modern UI stuff. The Modern UI stuff seems to work except when you actually run it. Both wine and my roommate's windows machine would break with my installer on the install step. Dunno what's with that, and wine complains about an invalid window class name. My current theory is that this is somehow related to the libiconv problem I had earlier (libiconv was originally failing on "MS MainDlg" or something like that before).

qwest is being annoying again. My email is being hosted by a machine at my parents house with the net connection being qwest. Something strange is happening there, and it appears it is qwest's fault this time. Half the time I give out that email address, and half the time I give out my sf.net address (which just redirects to the first address). Fortunately, I can change where my sf.net address redirects to. So now it redirects to my gmail address, and with the ability to use POP3 to receive mail from gmail means I don't have to deal with the horrible variable width fonts gmail likes to use :).

Also, newegg got my check yesterday for my new case, but I didn't find out until today because it was trying to go to my normal (but down) email address. It looks like my old power supply got clogged with dust, which is a problem I don't think I'll have this time. (Plus, the power supply had unusually small heatsink on it, so it was much easier for it to overheat).

Oh yeah, finals are coming up too, which is annoying.

Well, my power supply decided to eat itself.

Upon getting back to my dorm room, I plugged in my computer. I thought I smelled a sort of burning rubber, but I wasn't sure. My roommate thought he could smell it too, but only faintly.

The smell slowly got worse, and I went downstairs to get a drink. I come back up, and the smell is even worse, and my computer is off. Turned out my power supply had died, but fortunately the guy on the otherside of the hallway had an extra one.

I'm starting college this fall...and...my money situation isn't so happying.

I have a job, but they didn't have the right bank info (routing # and what not) so they couldn't pay me yet. Parents are dragging their feet, and I only get about half of tuition from them + a few other small things. Everything else, like the rest of tuition and room and board I have to pay for. Bleh. First bill (1/3 for semester) is due ...in 4 days. Dammit. I've heard I can't get finicial aid/loans of any time for 100 days (I think?), but it doesn't matter because to fill the stuff out my parents need to fill out their taxes, which they still haven't done (they have an extension). Dammit.

To make it worse, I'm building a computer that is supposed to last me for a while (at least through college probably), and it isn't helping my money situation. In total I think I'll spend about $400-$450 on it. I've started ordering parts.

Got my replacement hard drive yesterday. I'm reinstalling everything and restoring my backups, so yeah.

I tried to get data off the dead one even though there wasn't much chance, but no such luck. But hey, backups work too.

Continuing my sudden out of characterness by actually posting real useful information, here is an update on my dead hard drive.

How it happened: I have had some random file system corruption since I got the drive, but it was rare and files that weren't very hard to replace. Since I was backing up semi-regularly, I didn't worry -too- much about it.

Last night it finally died with the click of death. In other words it died and started making a repetitive clicking noise (I believe this is an Hitachi drive). The computer froze (no mouse response) (or at least X froze, but the clicking alarmed me, so I shut it off).

Upon starting it back up, the clicking resumed. Furthur inspection revealed that it was indeed the hard drive clicking itself to death.

What is happening now: The computer is under warranty, and my dad (who purchased the machine in the first place) has called the 'manufacturer'. We'll pay for a new drive, install the new drive and OS, and then try to get data off the old one if we can (not likely). Then we'll send back the old drive and get refunded (remember, warranty)

What has been lost: Almost exactly a week of work. My last backup (not full system, just my data) was May 24 2004, which was a week ago yesterday. I was running a small server (mail, www, etc) and the more critical parts (mail) have been moved to a friend's machine for the time being. I also have to use the winnt machine, or the computers at work.
